Ohio Athletic Conference

October Scholar-Athlete of the Month: Chelsea Huppert, Ohio Northern

Ohio Northern senior Chelsea Huppert has excelled both on the court and in the classroom from the moment she stepped foot on the ONU campus in the fall of 2016.

She has been an anchor in middle of the starting lineup from day one and has started all 108 games in her career as a Polar Bear.

Huppert entered her senior season as a two-time Honorable Mention All-American, First Team All-Great Lakes region honoree and First Team All-OAC award winner.

She was also named Honorable Mention All-Ohio Athletic Conference as a freshman, putting her on pace to be selected All-OAC four times in her career.

“Chelsea optimizes what it means to be a student-athlete,” ONU head coach Kate Witte said. “She is a terrific young woman who is a leader in our program. She has been outstanding at everything she does and we are so glad to have her in our Ohio Northern family.”

The Bremen, Ind., native has helped Ohio Northern win three consecutive OAC Regular Season titles, two OAC Tournament crowns and three NCAA Tournament appearances in her first three seasons.

This season, she helped the Polar Bears clear a major hurdle in their quest for a fourth straight league crown, leading the team with 21 kills in a five-set thrilling victory over Muskingum in the OAC opener.

This season, Huppert ranks second in the OAC with a .363 hitting percentage and a 1.07 blocks per set average.

She also leads the team with 126 kills.

Midway through her senior season, Huppert ranks 10th all-time in ONU history with 1,151 kills. She is also eighth with 331 blocks, third with 108 block solos and is third with a .340 hitting percentage.

Her academic prowess may be even more impressive. Huppert is a two-time First Team Academic All-District and is a two-time Academic All-OAC honoree as a pharmacy major at ONU.

She won the Ohio Northern pharmacy council centennial award, has earned pharmacy class honors all three years and has been named to the dean’s list all six semesters.

Huppert also interns in the pharmacy department at Meijer Stores and won the regional competition as the top student intern in the central region of the USA.

She is involved in a long list of campus originations and honoraries, being highly involved in the American Pharmacist Association, the Student Society of Health System Pharmacists, Kappa Epsilon Pharmacy Fraternity and the Phil Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Honorary.

Her future is very bright indeed, both on the court, leading her Polar Bears in their quest for a fourth consecutive OAC crown, or by serving people in need both as a pharmacist and a community volunteer.
