Singles Play The Difference As Blue Streaks Cruise To Fourth Consecutive OAC Women's Tennis Championship

John Carroll was leading 2-1 after three doubles matches in the 2019 Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship title match against Ohio Northern Saturday evening.

The Blue Streaks must have decided they had been in southwestern Ohio long enough.

Lauren O'Malley, then Skye Harwood, and then Megan Reese made quick work of their opponents to close out the Polar Bears for a 5-1 victory that secured a fourth consecutive OAC crown for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll is the first team in the 34-year history of the OAC women's tennis championships to win titles in four consecutive years. The only team that had won three in a row prior to John Carroll was Wittenberg from 1986-1988.

The Blue Streaks had hoped to sweep doubles like they had in the regular season match-up against Ohio Northern last week. While JCU got two wins -- O'Malley and Madisyn Rini won 8-2 at #1 doubles and Alyssa Krupp and Carlye Campagna won by an 8-5 score at #3 doubles -- the team of Ashley Ochsenhirt and Mackenzie Wills edged Reese and Harwood, 8-6, at #2 doubles.

O'Malley, who had won her 175th career match in doubles, made it 176 career wins as she picked up JCU's third point with a 6-0 6-0 dismantling of Ochenshirt (a 100-plus match winner in her career at ONU).

Harwood and Reese exacted their revenge for the doubles loss by closing out the match within minutes of each other. Harwood cruised past Abigail Staskiewicz 6-0, 6-1, setting the stage for Reese's clincher. The freshman won at #3 singles by a 6-2 6-1 count over Kaleigh Cummins.

John Carroll improved to 15-5 with the win, and will advance to the NCAA Division III Championships for the fourth consecutive year. Ohio Northern ends its season with a record of 20-7.
