John Carroll exhausted its drama quotient once again.
The 2019 Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship came down to the last match on the court, and junior
Adi Jha came through with a win over Ohio Northern's Zach Beaschler to secure the fifth and final point needed for the Blue Streaks to be victorious, 5-4.
Weather was not ideal for either team on Saturday. With fog in the air and a rain delay, John Carroll had to keep their eyes on the prize.
John Carroll headed into the match off of a huge semifinal win against the Purple Raiders of Mount Union. The Blue Streaks won 5-1, sweeping all three doubles matches.
The Blue and Gold were looking for the same result in their play against the Polar Bears. In the regular season meeting between these two teams a week ao, in an eerie portend, it all came down that day to fourth singles where Jha prevailed over Beaschler in three sets to secure a 5-4 win.
On Saturday afternoon at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, it took a little bit for the Blue Streaks to get warmed up. In the third doubles spot,
Adi Jha and
Parker Holyn fell to the Ohio Northern duo of Connor Christian and Andrew Cochran, 8-3.
Andrew Triner and
Gustavo Garcia got the team's morale back up with their 8-5 win over Hoang Do and Zach Beaschler.
Andy Siciliano and
David Sinense kept that energy up with a nail-biter of a first doubles match, winning 8-7. The Blue Streak duo won the tiebreaker, 7-4
The weather then took a turn for the worse and the match moved indoors to the South Regency Tennis Club in Miamisburg. Once there, JCU raced to victory in two matches as the Blue Streaks' lead swelled to 4-1.
Triner added a point to John Carroll's lead by defeating Connor Christian 6-0, 6-4 in the fifth singles play. Garcia kept the winning streak going by conquering his opponent 6-6 and 6-1 in the third singles spot.
Ohio Northern would make John Carroll work for that fifth point.
Sinense and
Doug Moore fell to their opponents in the second and sixth singles spots, both falling in the third set, causing the Blue Streaks to only lead by one with Siciliano and
Adi Jha left to still play.
Siciliano had won the first set, but Vinh Thai rallied to win sets two and three, tying the match up at 4-4.
That left it up to Jha and Beaschler at number four singles.Â
Beaschler took the first set, 6-2, but Jha rallied like he had done in the regular season clash. He would take the next two sets 6-2 and 6-1 to deliver John Carroll the Ohio Athletic Conference title for the fifth consecutive year.
John Carroll is the first team in 35 years to accomplish the achievement of winning five OAC tournament crowns ina row. Denison won six in a row from 1979-1984.
John Carroll, which improved to 9-9 on the year, advances to the NCAA III Championships. Ohio Northern ends their season with a record of 14-9.
