John Carroll University men's tennis headed into Saturday's match action with a chance to earn the first championship three-peat in program history. After five matches, the JCU mission was complete.
John Carroll swept Mount Union, 5-0, to earn the 2017 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament championship on Saturday in Mason, Ohio. With the victory, John Carroll (16-7) advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Blue and Gold also bring home the regular season and tournament titles for the third straight season.
The Blue Streaks rolled to three wins in doubles play, before finishing the win with two singles victories.
Tyler Cole and
Nick Siciliano started off the morning with an 8-4 victory at #3 doubles. It took a rally at #1 doubles to earn the second win.
Jad Abdul-Aal and
David Sinense trailed 5-4, but ripped off four straight to win, 8-5.
Gustavo Garcia and
Dillon O'Brien capped off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win.
In singles play,
Alex Guthrie finished first, sweeping his opponent in straight sets.
David Sinense was the man to cap off the tournament championship, ending his match at #3 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Sinsense was the lone Blue Streak to record two victories on the day.
The Blue and Gold went a combined 60-0 in eight matches against OAC opponents after a 6-3 win over Mount Union on Apr. 12. JCU went 11-0 in OAC regular season and tournament competition.
John Carroll has now won the OAC crown eight times -- 1990, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2006, 2015, 2016, and 2017.
