John Carroll University senior men's tennis player Jad Abdul-Aal has earned a place on the 2017 Academic All-America® Division III Men's At-Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)
Abdul-Aal, who has been selected to the Division III third team, becomes John Carroll's first Academic All-America® selection in three years.
A four-year letterwinner the men's tennis program, Abdul-Aal is the all-time leader in career victories in program history with 141 (72 singles and 69 doubles wins are also school records). The senior was a crucial part in all three of the Blue Streaks' OAC regular season and tournament championship teams (2015, 2016, 2017) which also led to three consecutive qualifications into the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Blue Streaks reached the second round of the NCAA tournament twice (2015 and 2017).
Abdul-Aal is a three-time OAC Men's Player of the Year (2014, 2016 and 2017) while also earning First Team All-OAC honors all four seasons -- the first to do so in program history.
John Carroll's 2017 male Clyde A. Lamb Award winner (the highest scholar athlete honor accorded to a student athlete in the Ohio Athletic Conference), Abdul-Aal was a double major in Finance and Economics who earned a 3.873 grade point average. A three-time Academic All-OAC winner, Abdul-Aal was also a member of the Dean's List, a member of Beta Gamma Sigma (the highest academic honor in business), earned third place in the Cleveland CFA Research Challenge and was a recipient of the CFA Program scholarship. The senior also held the Treasurer office in the John Carroll Finance Association and Investment Banking Club.
Abdul-Aal, who graduated with summa cum laude honors in May, will work an analyst at Antares Capital in Chicago, Illinois.
The CoSIDA Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2016-17 Division III Academic All-America® teams program. The at-large teams consist of student-athletes from the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming & diving, tennis and water polo for both men and women, as well as beach volleyball, bowling, crew and field hockey for women, and volleyball and wrestling for men.
This is the 53rd time a John Carroll student-athlete has earned this distinction. Abdul-Aal becomes the 40th different student-athlete from JCU to receive this award.
