LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association announced the NCAA Division III National Team of the Week for March 13th late Tuesday evening and featured amongst the 10 team members were Capital University's
Mason Spaulding and
Gino Nave.
Spaulding, who is fresh off being named the OAC Offensive Player of the Week, led the Capital offense in a 3-0 week that saw the team erupt for 64 goals. Spaulding himself scored 20 of those goals – an average of 6.67 goals per game. His eight against Adrian tied a program single-game record. In addition to his offensive firepower, Spaulding recorded seven ground balls and four caused turnovers on the week. Spaulding is currently tied for sixth in all of NCAA Division III with 4.80 goals per game this season.
Nave, a freshman who has played just five games in the Purple and White, burst onto the scene this week, leading the Comets defensive midfield unit. As a long-stick midfielder, Nave recorded 21 ground balls and five caused turnovers in Capital's 3-0 week. Against Adrian, Nave had seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Against Hendrix, he finished with 10 ground balls and a caused turnover. He topped off the week with four ground balls and another caused turnover against LaGrange. His 10 pick-ups against Hendrix marked the first double-digit ground ball effort by a Capital player since April of 2021.
These national awards are the first for both Spaulding and Nave and they are the third and fourth different individuals in program history to earn the distinction.
Lake Harris earned the honor on March 2, 2021 and Brennan O'Callaghan won the award twice during the 2018 season.
Both Spaulding and Nave will be back on the field with their teammates later this afternoon at 3 p.m. as the Comets host Transylvania at Bernlohr Stadium.
