HIGH FIVE! Otterbein Dominates for Fifth-Straight OAC Title

FINAL RESULTS

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ohio – In yet another dominating performance, the Otterbein men's golf program made it five-straight Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Tournament championships Sunday afternoon in record-setting fashion at River Greens Golf Club.

The Cardinals, steadily pulling away to win the three-day event by 40 strokes, cleanly ran the top of the leaderboard as the lineup claimed spots 1-2-3-4-5 in the field of 45 total competitors. Otterbein finished the 72-hole format with a team score of 1162, good enough to settle comfortably ahead of runner-up Baldwin Wallace (1202).

"Extremely proud of the squad this weekend," head coach Brian Booher said. "There may have been a little doubt surrounding the team, but that certainly did not exist within our circle. I think we showed that this weekend."

Otterbein, which ironically did not win the combined regular-season title after a series of unusual events from the fall and spring invitational, left little doubt in the outcome this time around en route to securing another automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. The Cards will compete May 14-17 at Keene Trace Resort in Nicholasville, Ky.

Junior Sam Marty led the charge with medalist honors, claiming an OAC individual title as the only player in red numbers. He fired impressive rounds of 69-71-74-73 to finish five shots ahead of teammate Spencer Jordan (+4) in second place.

"This is such an awesome feeling to be part of another championship," Marty said. "To win the way we did is something I will never forget, and having this as my first college win was just icing on the cake. It's great to see hard work pay off and it was even greater having my coaches, teammates and parents there to congratulate me at the end."

"I am so happy for Sam," Booher added. "He went from fighting for his spot on Monday to being a conference medalist. That was a solid week of consistent and impressive golf."

Jordan posted Sunday's low-round of 70 (-2) while Johnny Peck and Tyler Dunfee tied for third after posting four-day totals of 293. That duo ended five-over par to situate two shots ahead of junior Kurt Fortman, the defending champion, who continues his impressive comeback after open-heart surgery in the winter. He bookended rounds of 70 and 73 to ultimately finish +7 for the tournament and claim another All-OAC honor.

The Cardinals have now captured their five-straight titles all by a double-digit margin, including a 28-stroke cushion last year and 41 back in 2016. Otterbein has now won 21 of the last 28 OAC Tournament crowns and will be looking to improve on its 13th-place national team finish last spring.

Full NCAA details and preview will come next week.
