SUNBURY, Ohio – The Otterbein University men's golf team wrapped up its eighth-straight Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) regular-season title on Saturday by 18 strokes over a shared second-place Mount Union and John Carroll at the two-day event held at NorthStar Golf Club.
The Cardinals, which also won the OAC Fall Championships by 11 strokes, held an eight-stroke lead over John Carroll after one round of play at the event with a 303 as a team before increasing its lead by 10 strokes in the final round. Mount Union checked in four strokes back from JCU after day one.
Otterbein sophomore
Kurt Fortman paced the field with a first-round score of 74, while senior
Austin Wells and freshman
Johnny Peck followed each with a 75.
Wells ended up the top-medalist in the 63-player field after registering a 74 in round two to total out at 149 for the event, his round-two score good for a share of the lowest score of the round alongside Baldwin Wallace's Hunter Miller.
Sophomores
Spencer Jordan and
Sam Marty also stood out for Otterbein after playing as individuals, shooting a 152 (76-76) and 153 (77-76).
Fortman followed in second-place with a 77 in the second round for a two-round total of 151. Peck rounded out yet another solid outing tied for fifth-place with a 79 in round two, adding up to 154 for the two days.
Sophomore
Tyler Dunfee the checked in tied for 15th-place with a 159 (79-80), before senior
Tyler Elgin rounded out the team score tied for 45th overall with a 166 (81-85). Freshman
Zach Thomson also had a notable finish tied for 36th-place with a 164 (80-84).
Next on tap for the Cardinals will be a test against top-tier competition from across the country at the NCAA Match Play hosted by Greensboro (N.C.) College on Apr. 6-7 at Grandover Resort, the site of this spring's NCAA D3 Championships. Otterbein is also scheduled to compete at the Denison Invite Apr. 7-8.
