MARIETTA, Ohio — After having one of the best offensive weeks in program history, Marietta College freshman
Austin Amburgey (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division III National Rookie of the Week Wednesday (April 5) afternoon.
In addition to Amburgey's Rookie of the Week honor, senior
Brett Carson (Ashville, Ohio/Teays Valley) was honorable mention for the NCBWA Division III National Hitter of the Week. Lebanon Valley's Shane Stossel was named the Hitter of the Week
Amburgey is the first Pioneer to win one of the NCBWA weekly awards since
Drew Holderbach (Fairfield, Ohio/Badin) was named National Hitter of the Week for the week ending on May 16, 2021. Five Pioneers have earned the weekly recognition from the NCBWA since the awards started in 2003. Matt DeSalvo was named the National Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on April 6, 2003; John Snyder was the National Hitter of the Week for the week ending on April 24, 2011; Saunders earned his honor for the week ending on April 29, 2012; and Holderbach in 2021.
Amburgey had a week to remember, as he started it by going 6-for-6 with eight RBI and a home run in Wednesday's 18-5 win over Wittenberg University. His six hits tied the single-game program record.
Amburgey then got base hits in his first two at bats at Ohio Northern University before walking twice and getting hit by a pitch to reach base safely in 11 straight plate appearances.
Amburgey finished the week batting .846 (11-for-13) with nine RBI, six runs scored, and a home run. He was named to D3baseball.com's Team of the Week and was the Ohio Athletic Conference's Co-Hitter of the Week.
Carson was also named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week selection and was OAC Co-Hitter of the Week with Amburgey. He hit .714 (10-for-14) over three wins with eight runs scored, six RBI, four doubles, three home runs, and a triple.
Carson had at least three hits in each game on the week. He went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI, a double, and homer in an 18-5 win at Wittenberg University and was 7-for-11 with five runs scored, four RBI, three doubles, a triple, and a homer in Sunday's sweep over Ohio Northern University. He was a single shy of the cycle in Sunday's nightcap.
The Etta Express, currently ranked No. 16 in the D3baseball.com Top-25, travels to No. 6 Baldwin Wallace University for a big Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday (April 7). Game one starts at 1:00 p.m.
