Aukerman's No-Hitter and Powerful Offense Help Baseball Dominate Capital In First Series of the Season at Schweickert Field

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – In what was a weekend to celebrate and honor the 50th anniversary of the founding of the John Carroll baseball program, many fans probably did not expect to also witness history at Schweickert Field in the team's doubleheader against Capital.

The added bonus was seeing Blue Streak pitcher Matthew Aukerman throw a no-hitter in the 14-0 victory in Game 1.  It marked only the third time the feat had been accomplished, and first since Steve Viola did it against Hiram in 1986.  The senior only allowed two base runners all game, both on walks, and struck out six in the process.

"It felt really good," Aukerman said after his no-hitter.  "Honestly, I didn't have my best stuff today, but I had an awesome defense behind me.  That definitely helped me all game, and thankfully I was just able to go out and give us a good game when we needed it."

JCU also took care of business in Game 2, winning 10-2 and improving their OAC record to 6-0 heading into the Easter break.

Game 1

While Aukerman was being near perfect, John Carroll's offense got things started in the third inning. Bryce Holt singled with runners on second to put the Blue Streaks up 1-0.

Again in the fourth, Jack Harmon drove a double into right center field to add a run. Joe Olsavsky would add a pair of RBIs to his totals with a single through the left side of the infield, and expanded the JCU lead to 4-0.

The Blue Streaks put together their largest offensive inning of the season when they exploded in the sixth.

Olsavsky was responsible for the first three runs in the frame, when he drove in two runs with a double into center, then proceeded to score on a wild pitch. A few batters later, Sean Connolly doubled down the right field line to tack on another two runs. Olsavsky was able to add on a run with another RBI single. Three runs came across the plate off of throw downs, which proved to be the final scores of the game.

Olsavsky's six RBIs matched his career-high that he set last year against Wilmington.

Aukerman locked in his no-hitter with back-to-back strikeouts, the final one on pinch hitter Ryan Brophy, which was followed by his teammates mobbing him during the celebration.

The feat also comes four years to the day after he threw a perfect game playing for Hudson High School in a 1-0 win over Cuyahoga Falls in 2019.

Game 2

After the no-no, the Comets jumped out in front in the first inning. A one out double and a passed ball set up Ty Clifton to send Capital up, 1-0, with a RBI single through the right side.

Cade Anderson tacked on another run for the Comets in the second inning by shooting a sac fly to left to increase their lead to 2-0.

John Carroll's offense then awoke, responding with a five run home half of the inning. Two singles kicked off the frame, and both runners were driven in with an Erik Daugenti double to right field. Olsavsky ripped a single to put Daugenti across home and Connor Mayle in a spot to be productive, with a runner on third. He did just that by pushing a run across with a sacrifice bunt. Holt finished off the scoring in the inning with an RBI single, putting JCU up by three.

Leading 5-2 and heading into the fourth, the Blue Streaks got rolling with three straight singles to start the frame. Holt hit a sacrifice fly to tack on another run. Justin Hanley drove in the last two runners with a double to left center. Connolly capped off the fourth with a single to put Hanley across the plate and extend the John Carroll lead to 9-2.

Jon Ambro put together six solid innings, only giving up one run on eight hits. The Medina native put together six strikeouts in his outing.

Holt and Hanley singled in the eighth to put the finishing touches on the game, making it a 10-2 final score.

Frank Freeman took over the reins from Ambro and pitched the final three innings. He only gave up a single hit and didn't allow a single run while striking out four in his collegiate debut.

The Blue Streaks now climb to 17-6 overall on the season. Come Tuesday, they will travel to Tiffin to take on Heidelberg in a doubleheader at starting at 1:00 pm.
