AKRON, Ohio – The John Carroll men’s swimming & diving team captured the 2023 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship for the seventh straight year and 20th of all-time.
The Blue Streaks totaled 948 points over the four-day event, Mount Union placed second with 676 points, Ohio Northern finished third with 632 points, Baldwin Wallace was fourth with 420 points and Wilmington was fifth with 282 points.
Liam McDonnell of John Carroll was named the OAC Swimmer of the Year. Ohio Northern’s Holden Cubberley earned OAC Diver of the Year honors, and the John Carroll staff was named Men's Coaching Staff of the Year.
The evening started with the 1650 freestyle, where Mount Union’s Conner Arneson finished first with a time of 16:15.12 and earned an NCAA B cut. Caden Traggiai (Wilmington) finished second (16:23.40) and Calob Cope (Ohio Northern) finished third (16:30.23).
In the 200 backstroke, John Carroll’s Luke Novak finished in first place with a time of 1:50.89. Mount Union’s Jacob Hathaway finished second with a time of 1:51.05 and John Carroll’s Jonathan Simoes finished third with a mark of 1:51.88.
Liam McDonnell from John Carroll placed first in the 100 freestyle, stopping the clock at 44.06, and securing an NCAA B cut. Ohio Northern’s Selby Wilt finished second (45.84) and John Carroll’s Jake Farr third (46.38).
John Carroll finished 1-2-3 in the 200 breaststroke, with Joe Nadur (2:03.27), Jonah Venos (2:06.63) and Patrick Branch (2:06.96).
In the 200 butterfly, Baldwin Wallace’s Tommie McQueary placed first, posting a time of 1:52.90. John Carroll’s Bailey Parsons was second (1:54.85) and Ohio Northern’s Jackson Stanley third (1:55.39).
In the one meter diving event, Ohio Northern’s Holden Cubberley placed first and broke the OAC record in the event with a score of 524.35 for 11 dives. Jason Heisler from Baldwin Wallace finished second (490.55) and Ohio Northern’s Charlie Spyker third (437.05). All top three divers earned NCAA B cuts.
John Carroll closed the 2023 OAC championship with a win in the 400 freestyle relay as the squad of Jake Farr, Liam McDonnell, Michael Heller and Owen Holm stopped the clock in 3:01.72, earning an NCAA B cut. Mount Union (3:04.72) and Ohio Northern (3:06.98) rounded out the top three.
This week, OAC swimmers will find out who qualifies for the NCAA Division III Championships in Greensboro, N.C., on March 15-18.
