Jake Phillips Earns a Spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week

Jake Phillips helped the Blue Streaks dominate the Student Princes in the trenches.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – John Carroll Football faced a stout challenge last Saturday against an undefeated Heidelberg team.

Playing in a tough environment, the Blue Streaks needed the defense to step into the limelight. Jake Phillips answered the call.

And so, Jake Phillips has made the D3football.com Team of the Week.

Phillips played a monster game in Tiffin. The junior defensive end wreaked havoc in the Heidelberg backfield as a constant presence. His statline tells the story:

6 solo tackles, 3 tackles for loss for 7 yards, 2 sacks for 6 yards.

All three were career highs for the Orrville, Ohio native on an outstanding day for the former Red Rider. Phillips now has 13 tackles on the season. Last season, Phillips tallied 25 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks.

Phillips helped to anchor a defense that stifled the Student Princes after the opening drive. John Carroll surrendered just 3.9 yards per play and 236 yards overall, including under 100 yards on the ground. JCU tallied 4 sacks in the game.

Phillips is JCU's first player to make the D3football.com Team of the Week this season. JCU earned a program-record five honorees in 2022.

A fun weekend awaits Phillips and the Blue Streaks. John Carroll Athletics will host Homecoming Weekend, starting with the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Friday and continuing with Saturday's home football game vs. Wilmington at 1:30 pm. Alumni and special guests will be honored before and during the game.
