Hitter-Baldwin Wallace senior outfielder Brenden Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y. / St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) led the Yellow Jackets to a doubleheader sweep of Wabash College (Ind.) and a 5-0 record on the season. Toughey had six hits in nine at-bats (.667), with four runs scored, two doubles, a homerun, four runs batted-in and a stolen base.

Pitcher-Ohio Northern senior Austin Price (Tiffin/Columbian) pitched five dominant innings, scattering two hits, striking out nine and not allowing a run, as the Polar Bears opened their season with a 15-1 victory over Hiram.

Hitter-John Carroll sophomore infielder David Lykens (Columbus/Thomas Worthington) helped the Blue Streaks to 6-2 record, including five consecutive wins, during their Florida spring trip. Lykens went 18-of-34 (.529), with nine runs, two doubles, two triple, one home run, a team high 17 runs-batted in and a .824 slugging percentage. Lykens had a career-high seven runs-batted in, one shy of the school record, in an 18-8 win over Moravian.

Pitcher-John Carroll junior Jimmy Spagna (Libertyville/Carmel Catholic) finished the week with a 2-0 record during the Blue Streaks Florida Spring Trip. On the week, Spagna pitched 11 innings, with10 hits, three runs, one earned, six strikeouts and held opponents to a .233 average. Spagna worked six scoreless innings as part of a 13-0 shutout of Eastern Nazarene.

Hitter-Marietta senior catcher Alex Toth (Painesville/NDCL) helped the Pioneers to a 5-3 record last week, hitting safely in all eight games, including four multi-hit games. Toth went 15-of-27 (.556), with nine runs, 12 runs-batted in, six doubles and finished week with a .778 slugging percent.

Pitcher-Baldwin Wallace senior Pat Havens (Twinsburg) compiled a 2-0 record with a complete game and a 0.60 earned run average to lead the Yellow Jackets past College of Mount St. Joseph and Denison University in Port Charlotte, Florida. In 15 innings of work, Havens  gave up just six hits, one run, walked six and struck out 14.

Hitter-Otterbein sophomore shortstop Sean Kettering (Malvern) helped the Cardinals finish their spring trip in Florida with a 6-1 record to improve to 13-2 on the season, tying the mark for best start in program history. Kettering hit 13-for -27(.481) on the week, with an impressive 17 runs-batted in, eight runs scored, five doubles, a triple, and two home runs.

Hitter-Marietta senior outfielder Aaron Hopper (Wheelersburg) went seven-of-12 (.583) with four runs, eight runs-batted in and three doubles last week to help the Pioneers to a 2-1 record. Hopper went 3-for-4 with two doubles and six runs-batted in a win over Montclair State University. In a win over No. 20 Huntingdon, Hopper was 4-for-4 with a double and two runs-batted in.

Pitcher-Capital sophomore Robert Fravel (Port Clinton) tossed a complete-game shutout to help the Crusaders to a 1-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Ohio Christian on Saturday. In seven innings of work, Favel gave up just five hits, struck out four and walked four. The Crusaders finished the week with a 3-0 record.

Hitter-John Carroll sophomore third baseman Mitchell Herringshaw(Cleveland/NDCL) went four-of-seven (.571) with one run, a double and six runs-batted to helped the Blue Streaks to a doubleheader split with Capital. Herringshaw drove in five of John Carroll’s 14 runs in a 14-6 win in game two.

Pitcher-Marietta senior Mike Mulvey (Glenshaw, Pa./North Catholic) finished the week with a 1-0 record and 0.00 ERA. Mulvey gave up just two hits and struck out three in two innings of relief against La Roche. Mulvey pitched six innings, giving up just one hit and tallying five strike outs in a win over Ohio Northern. Mulvey did not walk a batter and held opponents to a .107 batting average.

Hitter-Baldwin Wallace junior third baseman Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg) helped the Yellow Jackets to a 4-1 record, including a win against NCAA Div. I University of Dayton. On the week, Gugliotta went 12-of-18 (.667) with eight runs, 11 RBI, a double, a triple and three stolen bases. He also drew five walks, had a .739 on base percent and a .833 slugging percent.

Pitcher-Capital sophomore Robert Fravel (Port Clinton) gave up no earned runs on three hits, walked one and struck out eight in seven innings of work to help the Crusaders to a 3-1 victory over Ohio Northern. This is Fravel’s second complete-game win in his last three appearances.

4.15.13

Hitter-Baldwin Wallace senior Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute) batted .563 (9-for-16), with 10 runs, two doubles, two triples, two home runs, eight RBI and a stolen base to help the Yellow Jackets to a 3-2 record. He finished the week with a .619 on-base average and a 1.313 slugging percentage.

Pitcher-John Carroll senior Patrick O’Brien (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) helped the Blue Steaks to a 3-1 record last week. O’Brien gave up just two hits, no earned runs and recorded five strikeouts and no walks in seven innings of work.

Hitter-Otterbein senior catcher/utility Wes Meadows (Marion/Ridgedale) went five -of-17, with six runs, one double, three home runs and nine RBI to help the Cardinals to a 2-3 record on the week, including a sweep of Muskingum.

Pitcher-Capital junior Justin Hoying (Fort Loramie) pitched a complete-game shutout to lead the Crusaders to a 6-0 win over Wilmington. Hoying struck out a career-high nine batters and scattered five hits over seven innings of work.

Heidelberg senior Ethan Holt (Galion/West Holmes) finished the week with a 1.38 ERA to help the Berg to a 4-2 record. Holt picked up wins over No. 6 Marietta and threw a complete-game shutout over Mount Union. In 13 innings, Holt gave up 10 hits two earned runs, struck out 11 and walked nine.

4.29.13

Hitter-John Carroll junior first baseman/designated hitter Jimmy Spagna (Libertyville/Carmel Catholic)helped the Blue Streaks to a 3-1 record, batting .533 (eight-of-15) with five runs scored, 15 RBI, two doubles, one triple, two homeruns and a 1.200 slugging percentage. Spagna tallied two home runs in consecutive at bats vs. Case Western.

Pitcher-John Carroll sophomore Andrew Doring (Grafton, WI/Domincan) went 3-0 with a 0.68 ERA win his final four OAC starts, against Otterbein, Marietta, Heidelberg and Ohio Northern.  Doring gave up just 11 hits, four runs (two earned) and recorded 25 stikrouts in 26.1 innings.
